Seiko Mod Watch Troubleshooting – 25 Common Problems & Quick Fixes
Having trouble with your Seiko Mod watch? Most common issues are easy to resolve. Find your problem below for a quick fix.
Automatic Movements – NH34 / NH35 / NH38 / NH72 / NH05
1. Watch Not Running After Delivery?
The mainspring may have run out of power during shipping.
Fix: For NH34, NH35, NH38 and NH72 movements, unlock the crown if necessary and wind clockwise approximately 55 turns. For NH05, follow its movement manual.
2. Watch Stops Overnight?
Your watch may have insufficient power reserve.
Fix: Fully wind it before wearing. Most standard NH-series movements provide approximately 41 hours of power reserve; NH05 specifications differ.
3. Watch Stops Even When Worn Daily?
Limited wrist movement may not provide sufficient winding.
Fix: Start with a full manual wind. If it continues stopping unexpectedly, have a qualified watchmaker inspect it.
4. Watch Running Too Fast or Too Slow?
Small daily variations are normal for automatic watches.
Fix: Wind fully and monitor for several days. Our watchmakers target ±20 seconds/day during workshop testing. Actual performance may vary.
5. Watch Suddenly Gaining Minutes Per Day?
Magnetisation may be the cause.
Fix: A local watchmaker can usually test and demagnetise the movement in just a few minutes. This is a common and straightforward procedure.
6. Watch Makes a Spinning or Rattling Sound?
A light spinning sound from the automatic rotor is normal.
Fix: No action is needed unless the sound is unusually loud or accompanied by poor performance.
7. Seconds Hand Stops When Setting Time?
This is the normal hacking seconds function on movements that support it.
Fix: Push the crown back into its normal position.
VK63 Quartz Chronograph
8. Large Seconds Hand Not Moving?
This is normal! The large central hand is the stopwatch hand, not the regular seconds hand.
Fix: Press the upper button to start it. The small seconds subdial should run continuously.
9. VK63 Watch Completely Stopped?
The battery may be depleted.
Fix: A local watchmaker or jeweller can usually replace the battery quickly and inexpensively. Ask them to check the caseback seal afterward.
10. Chronograph Won't Reset to Zero?
Fix: Stop the stopwatch using the upper button, then press the lower button to reset.
If it remains misaligned, a qualified watchmaker can inspect the chronograph mechanism.
11. One Small Subdial Doesn't Move?
Each subdial has a different function: running seconds, stopwatch minutes, or 24-hour indication.
Fix: This is usually normal. The stopwatch minutes hand only advances during timing.
12. Chronograph Stops After 60 Minutes?
The VK63 chronograph is designed for timing sessions of up to 60 minutes.
Fix: Stop and reset the chronograph before starting another session.
Miyota 8285 – Day-Date Automatic
13. Miyota 8285 Not Running?
The movement may have run out of power.
Fix: With the crown in its normal winding position, turn clockwise approximately 20 times to start it.
14. How Do I Set the Day and Date?
Pull the crown to the first setting position.
-
Clockwise: Adjusts the day.
-
Counterclockwise: Adjusts the date.
Avoid quick calendar adjustments between 9 PM and 1 AM.
15. Day or Date Not Changing Overnight?
The time may be set to the wrong AM/PM cycle.
Fix: Move the hands to a safe daytime position, adjust the calendar, then reset the correct time.
16. Miyota 8285 Stops Overnight?
The watch may not have enough stored power.
Fix: Wind manually before wearing. The movement provides approximately 42 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
17. Miyota 8285 Running Fast or Slow?
Small daily variations are normal.
Fix: Fully wind and monitor over several days. A qualified watchmaker can check and regulate the movement if necessary.
Date, GMT & Crown
18. Date Changes at Noon Instead of Midnight?
The watch is likely set 12 hours out.
Fix: Advance the hands by 12 hours and reset the correct time.
19. Date Doesn't Change Exactly at Midnight?
Mechanical calendars may change slightly before or after midnight.
Fix: Small variations are normal. If the timing is significantly incorrect, a watchmaker can inspect the calendar mechanism.
20. Crown Won't Pull Out?
Your watch may have a screw-down crown.
Fix: Turn counterclockwise to unlock it, then gently pull outward. Never force it.
21. Crown Won't Screw Back In?
The crown may not be aligned with its threads.
Fix: Gently realign and screw clockwise. Stop if you feel resistance.
22. GMT Hand Moves Differently From the Hour Hand?
Normal operation. The NH34 GMT hand completes one rotation every 24 hours.
Fix: Set it to your desired second time zone using the NH34 manual.
Watch Case, Strap & Water Resistance
23. Bezel Only Rotates One Way?
Many dive-style bezels are designed to rotate counterclockwise only.
Fix: This is normal. No adjustment is needed.
24. Watch Bracelet Too Large?
Most metal bracelets can be resized by removing links.
Fix: Follow our Watch Strap Adjustment Guide, or visit a local jeweller for a quick adjustment.
25. Can I Swim or Shower With My Watch?
No. Watchbrick watches are conservatively rated at 3 ATM, suitable for light rain and occasional splashes only.
Fix: Avoid swimming, showering, diving, or submerging your watch. If moisture appears inside the crystal, stop using it and arrange a prompt professional inspection.
