# Who Actually Builds Your Seiko Mod?

## A “2–4 week build time” doesn’t necessarily mean your watch is being built for 2–4 weeks.

The Seiko mod market has grown rapidly, with sellers now operating across Australia, the UK, the US, Canada and around the world.

But there is one question that buyers rarely ask:

**Who actually builds your watch?**

Not where the website is based.

Not where the business is registered.

Not where the final parcel is shipped from.

But who actually handles the movement, installs the dial and hands, fits the watch together, checks the components and performs the final QC?

Because in the Seiko mod world, **selling a watch and building a watch are not necessarily the same thing.**

# “Made to Order” Doesn't Always Mean Made by the Seller

You've probably seen Seiko mod stores advertising:

**“Please allow 2–4 weeks for your watch to be built.”**

That sounds reassuring. It can create the impression that your watch is spending several weeks being carefully assembled on a watchmaker's bench.

But a long build time alone tells you very little about the actual process.

Depending on the seller's business model, that period may include third-party production, supplier processing, international transportation, receiving a completed watch and then forwarding it to the final customer.

There is nothing inherently wrong with outsourcing production.

There is also nothing inherently superior about a watch simply because the seller is located in Australia, the UK, the US or Canada.

**Geography is not quality control.**

The more important questions are:

**Who actually assembles the watch?**

**Does the seller control the components being installed?**

**Who performs the QC?**

**And does the seller actually know what happened during the build?**

# Selling the Watch and Building the Watch Are Two Different Things

A completed Seiko mod can look great in photographs.

But building one involves much more than selecting a case, dial and bracelet.

During assembly, a watchmaker may encounter problems with:

-   Dial alignment or dial feet
-   Hand fitment and finishing
-   Case tolerances
-   Crown and stem fitment
-   Bezel alignment
-   Bracelet and clasp operation
-   Movement condition or regulation
-   Dust or contamination during assembly

Many of these issues aren't obvious when looking at a component in a supplier catalogue.

Some aren't even obvious when looking at the component in your hand.

**You discover them when you actually build the watch.**

And that's where having direct control over assembly becomes important.

# What We've Learned From Building Watches Ourselves

One of the biggest lessons we've learned is simple:

**A component can look perfectly acceptable and still fail our assembly standards.**

We recently analysed many of our delayed orders to understand what was causing them.

One of the biggest reasons wasn't assembly capacity.

It was **component rejection**.

Across certain batches of dials, hands, cases and bracelets, we have seen approximately **15 out of every 50 components fail to meet our assembly standards.**

That doesn't mean every rejected component is completely unusable.

Sometimes the issue is relatively small.

But if our watchmaker isn't comfortable putting that component into a customer's watch, **we don't install it.**

Instead, we replace it.

And sometimes that means an order takes longer.

We know customers would always prefer to receive their watches sooner.

But we'd rather explain a delay than knowingly install a component that our own team has already rejected.

# Quality Control Should Start Before the Watch Exists

There is a major difference between **checking a completed watch** and **controlling how a watch is built**.

If you receive a finished watch from a third party, you can certainly inspect it.

You can check whether it runs.

You can look at the dial.

You can operate the crown.

You can inspect the exterior.

But by then, most of the components are already inside the finished product.

When you assemble the watch yourself, QC starts much earlier.

Our watchmakers can reject a dial before installation.

They can reject a set of hands.

They can identify a case fitment issue.

They can replace a bracelet.

They can inspect and test the movement.

They can correct alignment during assembly.

And, importantly, recurring problems can be fed back into our purchasing and manufacturing decisions.

**For us, QC isn't something that happens once at the end.**

**It's part of the entire build process.**

Our Sub-style cases are a good example of this.

We don't simply choose the cheapest generic Sub-style case available as commodity stock and install it across our watches.

Our cases are ordered directly from our manufacturing partner to our requirements, with particular attention paid to the finishing and polishing.

Why?

Because when your own team repeatedly works with a component, you start noticing the small details.

You understand where tolerances could be improved.

You see where finishing could be better.

You learn what your watchmakers prefer working with and what produces a better finished watch.

Those details are difficult to understand if your involvement begins only after the completed watch arrives.

# Another Real Example: We Had Problems With Our Bracelets

We also think transparency means being willing to talk about what hasn't worked.

When Watchbrick was first established, one of the most common pieces of customer feedback we received involved our bracelets.

We had reports involving issues such as **bracelet separation and clasp problems.**

We could have treated every case as an isolated warranty claim.

Instead, we looked at the component itself.

The feedback told us that the bracelet needed to improve.

So we changed it.

Today, we **separately order higher-quality bracelets from our manufacturing partner**, rather than simply accepting the standard bracelet option available with the case.

It costs us more.

But it addressed a weakness that our customers and our own assembly experience had helped us identify.

That's what QC means to us.

Not pretending that every product we've ever made has been perfect.

But identifying a problem, understanding why it happened and improving the component so the next watch is better.

### **Customer feedback shouldn't just fix one watch. It should improve the next hundred.**

# What About the Movement?

The movement deserves particular attention because it's one of the most important components inside an automatic Seiko mod.

If you're buying a watch advertised as using an **NH35, NH34 or another TMI movement**, don't be afraid to ask exactly what's inside.

The exterior of two watches can look almost identical while the components underneath can be very different.

There are genuine TMI NH-series movements as well as lower-cost alternatives in the market.

An aftermarket rotor can also change what the customer sees through an exhibition caseback, making it even more important to understand the movement underneath it.

That's why we encourage buyers to look beyond the exterior.

**Check the calibre. Check the jewel count. Check the manufacturer markings.**

And when the price of an otherwise similar watch looks unusually low, it's reasonable to ask:

### **Where is the difference coming from?**

A lower price doesn't automatically mean a bad watch.

But it shouldn't stop you from asking what's actually inside it.

# Ask These Questions Before Buying Any Seiko Mod

You don't need to be a watchmaker to ask good questions.

Before purchasing a Seiko mod, consider asking the seller:

**Who physically assembles my watch?**  
Is it your own team, or is the completed watch supplied by another company?

**What movement are you using?**  
If it's advertised as an NH35 or NH34, can you confirm the manufacturer?

**Do you inspect components before assembly?**

**What happens when a component doesn't meet your standards?**

**Is the movement timing-tested or regulated?**

**Who checks dial, chapter ring and hand alignment?**

**What final QC takes place before shipping?**

And if you're being told there is a **2–4 week build time**, there is nothing wrong with asking:

**What actually happens during those 2–4 weeks?**

A seller who understands and controls their product should be able to explain their process.

A watch being assembled in Australia doesn't automatically make it better.

A watch being assembled in Asia doesn't automatically make it worse.

The same applies to the UK, US, Canada or anywhere else.

**Geography is not quality control.**

What matters is who builds the watch, what components they use, what standards they apply and what happens when something isn't good enough.

A polished website doesn't tell you that.

A beautiful product photo doesn't tell you that.

And a “2–4 week build time” doesn't tell you that either.

Anyone can inspect a finished watch.

**The real difference is being there while it's being built.**
